The second oldest game reserve in the country, this popular Mpumalanga reserve has become a role model in a number of areas. Among the First achieved are its efforts regarding bush clearance, elephant re-location, rehabilitation projects, community education and staff training exercises.
Not only were they the first to successfully re-locate entire elephant families, they were also pioneers when it came to bringing down the Kruger Park fences. A major milestone was holding one of the first conferences on the subject at Thornybush in 1991.
Today's unique success with visitors is largely the result of a multi-million Rand programme that has taken place over the last three years: Included in this was a full-scale bush clearance project that has produced healthy results and, in the process provided training and involvement for over a hundred people in the neighbouring communities. Not only has the diversity and numbers of game increased, but visitors can now enjoy greatly-improved visibility. They are now more than confident about their promise to guests that they can expect to see at least four of the Big Five during a two night stay at the Reserve. |
