This very special RASCALS vacation offers you and your family the opportunity to experience the last of real frontiers. Alaska is a land of many contrasts - where you can stare into the face of an ice-age glacier one day; then, enjoy the thrill of a lifetime the next, when you zoom around America's tallest mountain with a bush pilot. Alaska has many faces: Home of the Northern Lights (the Aurora Borealis) The ultimate in wildlife viewing (from Moose to Bald Eagles, to Killer Whales and Grizzlies). The rich tapestry of modern Alaska is woven with threads of proud Native cultures, hardy Russian explorers and adventurous Gold Seekers.
Day 1
Depart Seattle for your flight to Fairbanks. Evening free to explore Fairbanks, overnight accommodations at the Westmark or similar. Built on the banks of the Chena River and surrounded by the rolling hill of the Tanna Valley, Fairbanks blends the charm of the last frontier with the energy and drive of a modern city.
Day 2
Morning departures for Denali National Park. You will board the McKinley Explorer train with it's domed viewing cars enabling your family to enjoy the wonderful scenery. Accommodations provided in or near the park with majestic views surrounding you.
Day 3
Denali National Park. Day and evening free to explore the area. Denali National Park, home of majestic Mt. McKinley, offers a unique opportunity to view one to the world's most magnificent wilderness preserves. Today you are free to enjoy one of the many optional activities offered in the Park Whitewater Rafting. Helicopter Flight seeing. Fixed Wing flight seeing (the best way to see Mt. McKinley at close range). Guided Horseback tours. Or take a journey into the Park itself on one of the Park Wilderness tours.
Day 4
This afternoon depart for the city of Anchorage. Board the McKinley Explorer to finish your trip through Denali. Overnight accommodation in Anchorage at Captain Cook Hotel, or similar, to prepare for the cruise of a lifetime.
Day 5
This afternoon you will be transferred to Whittier by van, via Turnagain Arm Road, catching a glimpse of Portage Glacier. At Portage, your van drives onto a railroad flatcar for a unique 20 minute train ride that tunnels direct through the Chugach mountains. After arriving at the DISCOVERY, relax in the lounge and enjoy specially prepared appetizers! The adventure begins in Port Nellie Juan where zodiacs zip out for an up close and guided exploration on the Nellie Juan Glacier. Return to the DISCOVERY in time for a delicious dinner of locally caught salmon, halibut, or crab. (Special meals available upon request.) The DISCOVERY spends each night anchored in a secluded cove.
Day 6 - 8
Enjoy breakfast from 7:00a.m. to 10:00 a.m., while the DISCOVERY is chugging off early for each day's new location. The DISCOVERY sail throughout Prince William Sound visiting such places as Knight Island, Cascade Waterfall, Eagle Bay, and College Fjord. Look for the dorsal fins & blow spouts of the Humpback and Orcas which can be spotted frequently along the way. Watch the playfulness of the Harbor Seals as you cruise right by them floating on the icebergs. Hiking, sea kayaking, and fishing are available along the way for everyone's enjoyment.
Day 9
Today you will be arriving in Cordova to finish up you voyage on the boat. You will enjoy Bed & Breakfast accommodations and a tour of this beautiful waterfront town.
Day 10
Continue your Cordova experience with a wonderful tour of Child's Glacier, overnight again in your Bed & Breakfast lodge.
Day 11
Depart this morning for your flight from Cordova to Seattle and on home, or extend your Alaska stay in the capital city, Juneau, and/or Gustavus.
Includes: Accommodations in Fairbanks, Denali & Anchorage in choice hotels, all transfers, all meals & drinks on the Discovery Voyage, full use of the Discovery's crew & facilities, guided hikes & excursions (including zodiacs & kayaks) on the Discovery, 2 nights bed & breakfast accommodations in Cordova, guided tours in Cordova, and all tax charges.
Alaska's season is short and very popular. We recommend, for best choice, booking your vacation approximately one year in advance. However, we can try to accommodate late bookings if you are flexible. Hotels and rates are subject to change depending on availability.
