St. KittsTourism is as yet undeveloped on St. Kitts, so if you like the Caribbean of 60 years ago, hurry on down! The main source of revenue is still sugar cane and you see vast tracks of this bright green crop swaying in the breeze as soon as you arrive! Only one hour from San Juan yet well off the beaten tourist path, St Kitts offers independent minded adventurers ample opportunities to explore. the hills are filled with monkeys, an import from Africa by French settlers. South of the bustling capital of Basseterre, in the Frigate Bay area, there are many beautiful azure bays and beaches for you to enjoy without having to share them with hotels or local vendors.

Originally the "Mother Colony" of the West Indies, St. Kitts boasts a rich history. Discovered by Columbus on his second voyage to the the New World in 1493, the island was named after his patron saint St. Christopher, also the patron saint of travelers. Affectionately know by it's nickname St. Kitts, this island was the first island in the Eastern Caribbean successfully colonized by Europeans, in 1623. Both French and Spanish and the English helped settle the island, and fought over it for hundreds of years. The English eventually won, and today St. Kitts still boasts remnants of it's colonial past.

Brimstone Hill Fortress is the best preserved fort in the Caribbean. Taking over 100 years to complete, this fort stands 800 feet above sea level, and offers excellent views on the island and neighboring Statia, as well as a museum. There are hundreds of well preserved cannons as well as soldiers' living quarters, and grassy knolls for kids to run and explore.

There are old English sugar plantations to explore, rock carvings which date from hundreds of years ago, and the rocky coast offers interesting snorkeling and SCUBA diving. The tallest peak reaches up 3,793 feet and offers hikers of all abilities beautiful hikes into the rain forest and waterfalls. Shoppers will enjoy a day trip to neighboring Nevis Island.
